Do you live in Appleton, the Fox Valley, or surrounding areas and need a flat screen TV wall mounted in your home? Whether you are looking for an aesthetically pleasing update to your home or trying to save badly needed space, wall mounting your plasma, LED, or LCD monitor is a great choice. TV mounts now come with a large variety of options and can be mounted to just about any surface including drywall, brick, cement, or tile.
If your not quite set on a TV wall mount, here is some information to help you make the correct decision.
Why Wall Mount a Flat Screen TV?
Having your television mounted on a wall has several benefits including the following.
- Space Saving – If your 1″ thick flat screen TV is sitting on an 18-inch deep table or stand, you’re wasting a lot of your precious living room real estate. And in a bedroom or small office, where space is at a premium, a TV wall mount may be the only thing that makes a flat screen TV a viable option.
- Adjustability – Even the most basic TV mounts come with at least a tilt adjustment so you can adjust your viewing angle. The higher end models have even more adjustability.
- Child safety – I’ve watched Youtube videos about the dangers of TV tip-overs, especially for small children or pets. Mounting your TV to the wall eliminates this danger, giving you additional peace of mind. Make sure, however, that the mount is UL listed, meaning it can withstand the hustle and bustle in your home and it is tested with up to 4 times the rated weight limit.
- It just looks good – Let’s face it, it’s pretty slick looking to see it mounted on the wall.
Purchasing Tips
Wall mounts come in a variety of shapes and sizes so finding one that works for your particular situation is actually pretty easy. Most mounts are universal and can fit any relatively new flat screen. However, there are some things you should consider.
- Screen Size and Weight – This is probably the most important bit of info you will need. These days however, weight isn’t much of an issue anymore as plasma an LED technology has really bought the weight of TVs down. But, it’s still good to know anyway.
- Features – What features are you looking for? The most basic mounts will have some kind of vertical tilt adjustment. Other options include a shallow mount, an articulating arm, and full motion.
- Mounting location – The most common place to mount a TV is above a fireplace in the living room. However, you can mount a TV just about anywhere. I’ve seen them in kitchens (under cabinet mounts), in corners (articulating arm mount), outside on a deck (exterior wall mount) and even in the bathroom!
- Mounting Surface – Most mounts have an assortment of wall fasteners for drywall to cement. Make sure the mount you get has the correct fasteners. All mounts should have the ability to attach to drywall studs but other mounting surfaces might need to be addressed ahead of time.
- Cost – Let’s face it, as cost efficient as TVs have become, they still pack a pretty punch to the wallet. So it pays to get a good mount. Typically you can expect to spend about $100 for most TV mounts. However, you can spend up to $200 for fully adjustable options or to support heavier TVs.
